Cricket is one of the most popular sports all over the globe and in the last recent year, this game became more popular in many countries.
Previously, where cricket was not that much popular Afghanistan is also one of those countries as we all know that cricket is becoming a popular sport in Afghanistan and so why not?
The Afghanistan cricket team has increased their level of playing cricket in their last few years that’s why they become the full member of the ICC cricket council in 2017.
And, not only this but some players of Afghanistan have been continuously performing well in the bilateral series, in the ICC tournaments or in many t-20 leagues (like IPL or KFC big bash) and not only highlighting their team name but also their names.
Players Like Rashid khan, Mujib-ur- Rehman, Mohammad Nabi taking their team forward by consistently doing a good performance.
In the past few years, the Afghanistan team has become successful and they started to qualify for the ICC cricket tournaments like World cup and they started playing more cricket in the last few years and they secured their ranking in the ICC One day cricket and in t-20 as well
well, this is the fact of a few years but you know how this sport founded in Afghanistan and how Afghanistan cricket has begun?
In 1839, by the Britishers in Kabul but that was not the match from where Afghanistan cricket started growing.
In 1990, Cricket started becoming popular in Afghanistan when some Afghan refugees started playing cricket in Pakistan. At the time of war, this Afghan refugee went to Pakistan but they didn’t leave playing cricket after come back to their home (Afghanistan).
And, The Afghanistan cricket board was formed in 1995. But as all other sports cricket was also banned by the Taliban but later the Taliban has approved this sport and cricket becomes the exception in Afghanistan.
Afterward, the Afghanistan team becomes the Affiliate member of ICC in 2001 and an Associate Member of the Asian Cricket Council since 2003.
But in 2000 during the time of war in Afghanistan, many Afghan refugee fleeing to Pakistan where some learn to play cricket and in 2001 after becoming an affiliate member of ICC Afghanistan went for a tour Pakistan for Four matches to in Peshawar and Rawalpindi and they went Pakistan for two more tournaments in 2003 and 2004.
Where they recorded their first-ever victory. After that, they took part in the Middle East Cup and became the runner-up against Bahrain. In that tournament, they defeated the (Melbourne cricket club) MCC side which was led by the former English captain Mike Gatting.
After the Middle East Cup tournament, they visited England for the seven matches against the England Domestic Teams and Afghanistan cricket team-recorded six victories out of 7 matches.
More success came in 2007 when they won their first-ever cricket tournament along with Oman. Afghanistan cricket team shared the trophy of ACC t-20 Cup along with Oman after a final match tied.
In 2009, the Afghanistan team played qualifier matches for the 2011 world cup along with (Ireland, Scotland, Uganda, Canada, Netherland, Kenya, UAE, Namibia, Bermuda, Oman, Denmark,). where they finish off at number 5 unfortunately, they didn’t qualify for the 2011 world cup but they qualified for the Intercontinental Cup.
In 2011, in spite of the fact that the Afghanistan cricket team loses the chance to qualify for the 2011 world cup, they earned ODI status for a long time.
But they won their first-ever ICC Intercontinental Championship. and become the runner-up in the 6th edition of the ICC Intercontinental Championship after losing the finals against Ireland 2011-13.
In the year 2013, they become the associated member of ICC which could help them to promoted cricket in Afghanistan
In 2015-17 they won the title the second time. In the World Cricket League, they quickly ascended through the positions as they won the Division Five, Division Four and Division Three titles over the course of about two years.
After the last 12 years of being an affiliate member, they became the Associate Member of the International cricket council (ICC) in 2013. Four years later, after almost 20 years of the (ACB) established, they become the full member of the ICC along with the Ireland team.
The Journey of their success has not stopped here afterward they qualify for the 2015 cricket world cup along with Ireland through 2011–13 ICC World Cricket League Championship. But unfortunately, they lost 5 out of 6 matches and eliminated from WC 15.
In 2019, Afghanistan has qualified for the ICC WC 2019 in England and wales. Unfortunately, they lost all their matches but played really well cricket in front of one of the strongest teams of cricket world like India, Sri Lanka.
Currently, they are on the 1oth position in ICC ODI Team Rankings.
Test Status Of Afghanistan National Cricket Team:-
Afghanistan national cricket team played their very first International Test match against India at Bengaluru on 14th June 2018 and their debut in test cricket has become a nightmare for them because they lost that match by an inning and 262 runs within two days.
T-20 -Status Of Afghanistan National Cricket team:-
They played its first t-20 Internationa match in 2010 against Ireland in (Sri Lanka Associates t-20 series) where Ireland won the match by five wickets.
Although the Afghanistan national cricket team lost their debut t-20 match against Ireland. But they are doing good performances from the last few years in t-20 cricket that’s why they qualify for the ICC t-20 world cup 2010, 2012, 2016.
They holds the world record of scoring maximum runs in an innings 278 for 3 against Ireland and passed the record of the Australian team they made 263 for 3 against Sri Lanka.
In this highest-scoring match, Hazratullah Zazai from Afghanistan scored 162 not out the second-highest record by an individual in the t-20 cricket.
They also have one of the best t-20 players like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Mujeeb-ur-Rehman. These players not only highlighting the name of their teams but also making the place in the cricket world. They not just play ODI cricket, Test or T-20 Cricket for their teams but also play in one of the biggest T-20 Leagues like (Indian Premier League or KFC Big Bash ).
Rashid Khan becomes the first Afghanistan Player who makes his debut in the IPL in 2017. He sold for the 4 cr. Rupees. and played IPL for the Sunrises Hyderabad and took 18 wickets and impress everyone with his bowling after that he became the leading bowler of Afghanistan and he also became the fastest to reach 100 wickets in ODIs. In the process, he has become the number one ranked bowler in T20 Internationals.
In the next year 2018, His fellow teammate Mujeeb-ur-Rehman also got the call from IPL as he sold in 4 cr. Rupee and joined the Kings XI Punjab and he did quite a good job and picked up 14 wickets.
Because of these kinds of quality players, the Afghanistan cricket team constantly performing well in International Cricket.
